The Founder Master

Acharya Dr. M. J. Pillai, The Master, a Yoga and Martial Arts Educationist, is one of 21st century's most renowned Martial Arts Masters, Yoga Acharyas and Spiritual Gurus. Through His extensive martial arts and yoga journey, the Master has trained thousands of students—men, women, and children— since 1985, from across the world.

Early Life

The Master was introduced to martial arts at a very young age. Early success and an ever-deepening passion for martial arts made the Master learn and master various systems of martial arts, such as Karate, Kalari, Kung fu, Kickboxing, Taekwondo, Varmam, and Ninjutsu. This extensive and profound experience earned Him the degree of Black Belt 7th DAN. He was a member of several US-based Ninja organizations and was invited to attend the 5th World Ninja Summit in the USA.

But even while He mastered so many styles and systems of martial arts the Master realized that the true purpose of martial arts was something beyond fighting and self-defence. This quest took Him on a unique and fascinating journey.

The Quest

The Master sought answers through various books and magazines and interacted with other martial arts masters of that time. He read that martial arts was practiced as a part of our culture in ancient India, thousands of years ago. It was then introduced in China in 540 A.D. by Master Bodhidharma, an Indian spiritual Master, who was a Tamil Prince from south India’s Pallava Empire, and whose place of birth is known to be Kanchipuram in modern day Tamil Nadu, India.

The Master learnt that Master Bodhidharma introduced Dhyana (Chan in Chinese and Zen in Japanese) along with martial techniques to the monks at the Shaolin Temple. This later came to be known as Shaolin Kung Fu, which later became the source of Karate, Taekwondo, and other systems of martial arts that are now popular around the world.

The books stated that Master Bodhidharma saw that the monks were physically weak and so he taught them martial arts to make them physically strong and also to defend themselves against bandits and wild animals.

During the Master's journey, the Master reached high level of training in the art of Ninjutsu. Ninjutsu is a complete martial arts form and has many other elements within it like war tactics, martial arts weapons training including concealed weapons, yoga-like body toning exercises, mantras, yantras, mandalas, mudras, mystical practices, balancing electro magnetic energy, etc. which are found in ancient Indian yogic practices.

The Master then tried to seek deeper answers from His then teachers and Masters about these elements to fulfil His quest, but none of them were able to give Him satisfactory answers because in the current training regime more importance was given to martial and combat techniques. In fact one Master stated outright that they themselves are unaware of the depths of these practices and that these mystical sciences can be learnt from ancient Indian Yogic sciences.

Upon learning that these sciences were an inherent part of Indian culture, the Master's quest intensified and He studied various ancient Indian arts and sciences like the Art and Science of Varmam Shastra, and Yoga Vedanta. He also learnt various healing arts like Medical Acupuncture, Reiki Energy Healing, and Medicines.

He earned prestigious titles such as Yoga Siromani, Yoga Acharya, Varma Valloon, Reiki Grandmaster, and Doctor of Medicines (M.D.)

The turning point

In the year 1995 the most significant development took place. Due to the Masters profound pursuit destiny itself took the Master to the Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Ashram where the Master was initiated into traditional Yoga Vedanta, in the divine lineage of His Gurudev, Swami Sivananda Saraswati of Rishikesh, and with the blessings of His Gurudev He was awarded the titles of Yoga Siromani and Yoga Acharya.

With the touch of Gurudev’s divine energy, the Master attained spiritual awakening, and He was empowered with the understanding of how Martial Arts can be a powerful tool to lay the path for spiritual growth. He was also empowered with the understanding of the pure essence of Yogic science for spiritual growth.

After this understanding the Master founded the divine arts of Moxsh Martial Arts, Moxshlife Yoga and Moxshology. These spiritual arts are the result of the Master’s decades of practice and teaching in martial arts, yogic science, healing arts and spiritual arts and Gurudev’s Divine Blessings.

The Master later learnt that Gurudev, in His early years, used to practice South Indian Martial Arts. The Master was pleasantly surprised and he then understood the reason why the existence chose that He be encountered specifically with Gurudev’s divine energy for the completion of His quest.

The Master understood that, Martial arts and yoga asanas practiced without achieving the state of meditativeness makes you a Master Technician, but not a Selfless Master. A technician perfects the outward aspects of the art that are visible, but remains unaware of the energy factor, which is the essence beyond appearances.

Realization vs. Reality of Martial Arts and Yoga

While the Master had attained the divine realization of the true purpose of martial arts, He saw that today all popular systems of martial arts focus on competitive fighting, prize money, etc. He realized that over generations, martial arts teachers across the world had modified and watered down the art and shifted its focus for their personal or social needs. As a result, this art which was practiced in the temple, proceeded as sports and title bouts, and finally ended up as violent, brutal fights in the ring.

He realized that the popularity of various title championships that tout prize money worth millions of dollars and the presence of most martial arts systems in tournaments and title bouts, etc. are fuelling people's desire to learn martial arts not for health and/or self-defence or as a way of life, but as a competitive fighting-based sport.

Even children, as young as 5-year-olds, are trained in this manner. Just to win medals and bring so-called 'glory' for their family, state or nation, the practitioners are often trained in a brutal, painful and violent manner, most often against their will and instigated to spar or fight the opponent. Such practices are even encouraged by most of the martial arts schools around the world.

The Master felt that there are enough sports—like swimming, badminton, athletics, gymnastics, cycling, etc.—that can be introduced in international sports forums and there is no need to introduce martial arts as a competitive fighting-based sport.

The Master also saw that the same thing has happened with yoga and most people have forgotten its original purpose. Yoga Vedanta on its own is a complete science for the body, mind and spiritual growth. Yoga Vedanta is a deep science and through study of its various branches and subjects we can attain ‘yog’ meaning union of the individual soul with the supreme soul.

But today in majority, under the name of ‘Yoga’ all that is taught is yoga asanas which in reality is just one tiny subject of this broad science. Yoga asanas is one subject in Ashtanga Yoga (eight limbs of yoga), which is a part of Raja Yoga which is one of the four paths of yoga!

But it doesn’t end there, today practice of yoga asanas has become a fad or a fashion and there are even yoga asana competitions. Promoters of Yoga justify that these competitions or fads act as a motivation for people and increase the popularity of Yoga but the Master says that simply by magnifying the divine qualities of Yoga the same
can be achieved. Such competitions, etc. instead diminishes the true value of this science.

So, although today, Yoga is one of the most popular exercise regimes around the world, it has been reduced to just that: an ancient Indian exercise regime called ‘yoga’.

Bringing Back the Divinity in Martial Arts and Yoga

Having experienced the essence of martial and yogic science, the Master decided to bring out the arts in their complete form. The Master founded Moxsh Martial Arts. Moxsh Martial Arts is a system for an authentic martial experience. Moxsh Martial Arts gives practitioners a chance to experience the same energy that the Master experienced. It is the first martial arts system in modern times that focuses on spiritual awakening along with fitness, health and self-defence.

The Master also founded Moxshology—The Science of Ultimate Liberation. Moxshology is a spiritual science for ardent spiritual seekers. It is based on the Master's spiritual experience as well as His understanding of the moods, energy factors, and state of mind of people in the 21st Century. Along with Master's guidance, it comprises high-energy exercises and intensive meditation for enlightenment.

The Master has also founded Moxshlife Yoga. It encapsulates the Master's teachings and experience of traditional yoga for modern people. It comprises elements of Yogic Science and demystifies ancient practices and offers a simple approach to a pure and divine lifestyle suitable for the 21st century. It is a way of life and gives the complete yogic experience: fitness, health, peace of mind, contentment, and YOGA.

Through Moxsh Martial Arts, Moxshology, and Moxshlife Yoga the Master guides people on the path of liberation or Moksh. The Master's in-depth understanding and experience in the fields of yoga, martial arts, healing arts and spirituality is what makes His teachings and His arts life-transforming to those who learn it.

The Master, known for His strict discipline and loved for being a pragmatist, has over so many decades, guided and trained thousands of students (Children and Adults) from different walks of life, in Martial Arts, Yoga, Healing Arts, Spirituality and life.
He guides them to lead a liberated life or 'Moxshlife' that the Master says is Spontaneous living or the ‘Only Way of Life’.

Hinduism
Hinduism is not a religion but a way of life based on dharma, which means righteous living. It is free from religious fanaticism and allows freedom in matters of faith and worship. As per Hinduism, one can worship any form that is most appealing, without disrespecting any other manner of worship. In Hinduism, there is no conversion to or from other religions, since it says that every religion is just a different manner of worshipping the same divine principle.

MoxshVihar: A Gurukulam
MoxshVihar is a Gurukulam with an Ashram Life. It represents an ancient Indian tradition where students stayed, worked and studied with their Guru (the Master). This was known as the Gurukulam system of education. Moxshlife Commune's MoxshVihar is a spiritual retreat for all seekers and practitioners to live and study under the guidance of a Master/Guru. It provides an environment that is conducive for personal and spiritual development.

Guidelines at Temples
Temples are places of worship and meditation. Therefore the sanctity of temples must always be maintained. One should take a bath and wear clean, modest clothing before entering the temple area. To the extent possible one must maintain silence and avoid unnecessary talk.

Satsang
Satsang is a Sanskrit word which is made up of two words: Satya and Sanga, meaning a gathering of seekers of truth. Usually held in the mornings and evenings, Satsangs include approximately 30 minutes of silent meditation, 30 minutes of mantra chanting, and an interactive talk session with the Master or reading on some subject of yoga philosophy.

Prayers (prarthna)
Prayers promote a feeling of humility and devotion. Prayers are usually in Sanskrit and are chanted at the beginning and end of each session or ceremony.

Puja
Puja is one of the forms of Bhakti Yoga (the yogic path of devotion). During a Puja ceremony, all the participants show their reverence to either God, a spirit, or any other aspect of the divine. There are invocations, prayers, bhajans (devotional songs) and other rituals. The Puja ceremony is meant to establish a spiritual connection with the divine. The Puja ritual itself is directed toward an object, which could be an idol, a photograph or any other elements of nature.

Homa
A Homa, which is also known as 'Havan', is a sacred ritual around the fire, which the Master says is the most powerful among the five elements as it 'rises up' against gravity. Auspicious substances are presented to the Divine through the fire. A Homa purifies the entire environment.

Aarti
The ceremonial Aarti is conducted at the conclusion of every satsang and puja. In the Arati, a flame which symbolises the light of knowledge, is moved in circular direction before images of deities and Gurus, as mantras are chanted by all attendees. It is a tradition to light the flame with camphor, as it is the only substance that burns without a residue, symbolizing the destruction of the ego without a trace with the dawn of knowledge. As the ceremony concludes, the flame is passed around to the attendees, and each one passes their hand over the holy flame and raises their palms to the forehead, symbolizing a form of divine blessing. Finally, the 'prasad' or sacred food material is offered to all attendees.

Shoes & Feet
According to Hindu tradition, Shoes, and to a lesser degree, feet, are associated with being unclean. Shoes are not permitted inside any buildings in MoxshVihar, especially in places of worship and dining. Shoes should be placed neatly in the spaces provided for them. One must avoid pointing feet at the place where the Master is seated or at the altar, as this is considered disrespectful.

Hands
In India, the left hand is generally used for personal hygiene, and therefore one must not use the left hand when interacting with others. In MoxshVihar, meals are served in the traditional manner where everyone sits on the floor and eats with the right hand. It is considered rude to offer anything or serve food etc. with the left hand. One must eat, offer and receive (especially food and prasad) with the right hand.

Books
According to Hindu culture, books are symbolically associated with Saraswasti, the goddess of learning and creativity. It is considered disrespectful to place the feet or sit on books.

MoxshPuram

Paradise on Earth

In the recent years the Master felt a need for a secluded recluse where dedicated seekers can stay with the Master and learn and experience the essence of dhyaana through the Master's arts and teachings. He sought a sizeable place, radiating with positive vibrations, untouched by noise, pollution or crowds. In the year 2022, the Master bought exactly such a place. Spread over 4.25 acres the serene land is at a mountain-top in Sangameshwar, Ratnagiri, Maharashtra. The beauty of this place has been described by disciples as 'Paradise on Earth'.

Need for MoxshPuram
The journey of self-discovery, although simple is yet so complex that it not only needs sustained and uninterrupted effort but also the constant guidance of a Master. As such, a proper recluse is an indispensable necessity for seekers. It serves as a secure enclave far-removed from the bustle of routine life eminently conducive for contemplation and meditation and also a place brimming with positive vibration made possible by the presence of a Guru.

To a divine future
In the coming years it is the vision of Master's disciples to develop this beautiful land into a fully functional ashram-style centre. Condusive for the stay and study of seekers. The plan is to be self-sustained. Where there shall be intensive high-energy programs, but along with that the life will be one with nature. A relaxed and peaceful life. A place to establish our Moxshlife 'Commune'. To stay together and live ‘Moxshlife’.

Where is MoxshPuram?
MoxshPuram is situated at Sangameshwar, Ratnagiri, Maharashtra, India. It is spread over 4.25 acres at a mountain-top on the Sahyadri Mountain range, with breathtaking view of the city below. Touching the clouds with a view of green valleys and dense forests around.

Moksh and Moxshlife

Understanding Spiritual awakening/enlightenment
Throughout our lives we have considered ourselves to be separate from this divine existence, which you may also call as God/Godliness/divine energy, because our ego or our mind considers the self as the body that we have obtained. But the body is just a shell for our soul which is a part of the existence itself.

To understand this the Master gives us the example of bubbles. Just like when a bubble forms in the ocean, due to friction of air, that drop of water separates itself from the ocean, but, once the bubble bursts, the water droplet unites and becomes the ocean and exists as the ocean itself. Similarly, when we die, when we leave our body, our soul becomes a part of this existence once again

But when alive we live unaware that we are actually part of this existence because we identify the ‘self’ as our ego. Our ego, which is fuelled by our thoughts, past experiences, future expectations, etc. We identify a ‘self’, a ‘self’ that we feel exists. And then we identify everything around us and the entire existence through this ‘self’. But in reality, the ‘self’ doesn’t exist, nothing really exists except the existence itself. Just like the bubble, what we identify with is merely an illusion of the ‘self’ and therefore an illusion of the existence as well.

So, when are we in fact actually the mighty sea, why should we exist merely as a bubble? Hence, the entire purpose of our life, which is exclusive to human life alone, is to break this illusion/barrier while alive, and consciously reunite with the existence, and then to live or exist as the vast existence itself.

Then the whole purpose of human birth, which is to die or to leave this body with complete awareness or consciously, can be achieved.

What is Moksh? What is Moxshlife?
Now, when you are awakened/enlightened or have broken that shell/that illusion/that ego, you unite with this existence and you attain Moksh. What is Moksh? Moksh is where you no longer carry your social mind/ego. You have no fears, dogmas, stigmas, etc. There is no longer ‘I’ or ego. You see the whole world ‘as it is’. You experience things firsthand with complete awareness. You spontaneously respond to things and naturally understand things without bringing information from your mind, from the past. There is no yesterday, there is no tomorrow. The Master calls this spontaneous living as Moxshlife. And all His teachings, arts and guidance, is so that we attain Moksh and live Moxshlife.

The state of Moksh can be described as the blossoming of a flower. From the bud it blossoms into a beautiful flower. This blossoming in turn spreads a fragrance and that unique fragrance is the message of unity with the existence.

Similarly, when we as humans blossom (attain Moksh) like that flower we too spread our fragrance of unity with this existence.

The whole arrangement is to die consciously or with awareness. Currently we die unconsciously or with no awareness.

Moksh vs Mukti
There is a difference between the word’s Moksh and Mukti. Today unfortunately the term Mukti is being used as a substitute for Moksh. Mukti means ‘freedom from’ and Moksh means ‘freedom for’. Mukti is often used as a religious term that prescribes many conditions and acts to gain freedom from agony of sins and karmic effect and to go to heaven after death. But Master says that everyone is bound to their karma. If you do good you shall reap its positive effects in this life itself, and similarly if you do bad you shall reap its negative effects in this life itself. Master says that there is no one to give you heaven or hell after death. You will either prosper or suffer in this life itself according to your karma. Your actions decide whether you shall live in hell or heaven.

Spiritual awakening/enlightenment or Moksh is freedom for spontaneous living or ‘Moxshlife’ the result of which is a natural, healthy and stress-free life. Master stresses that why should we worry of what will happen after death, or rely on false promises of benefits after death, why not instead focus on living properly today.

“We have gotten birth in this body, we have fed and cleaned this body, aged in this body and ultimately, we will die also in this body. Then why are you concerned about what will happen after we die? Instead learn to live in this body today, now, in this moment!” -- Acharya Dr. M. J. Pillai
